Special Session: Convening learning partnerships for effective collaborative action in critical catchments

This special session will entail looking at how to convene stakeholders to establish partnerships to safeguard water resources (or another conservation focus) in critical catchments and priority landscapes. The experiences of the WWF-Mondi Water Stewardship Partnership will be shared from the last 6 years of implementing water stewardship in different catchments (e.g. uMngeni, uMhlathuze and uMkhomazi) with different sectors, namely sugar, forestry and dairy, and within different corporate partners.

This type of convening work normally involves working with multiple land-uses and sectors, as well as within the value chains of various agricultural sectors – and yet the staff expected to convene partners are usually trained in technical conservation or environmental disciplines with little to no training in softer skills, such as relationship building, convening and facilitation. Thus, we would like to share about HOW we have been working – which is strongly aligned with social learning approaches – which can be applied to other types of ecological infrastructure work, where there is a need to cross boundaries - both physical, social and sectoral, and within a value chain.

Come listen to our mistakes! It is often said that if you are not making mistakes you are not learning or making progress. Our project team will share on topics, such as the following:

  • The power of convening learning partnerships for safeguarding critical catchments
  • Lessons learnt in mainstreaming water stewardship in the dairy industry
  • Lessons learnt in working with the forestry sector
  • Lessons learnt by Mondi in a catchment partnership and in their internal water stewardship journey

Closed session - no external presentations will be included, but participation in the session during the Symposium is open to all. All submissions not linked to special sessions will be structured into logical groupings in the remainder of the programme. Please contact the Secretariat to be put in touch with the convener if you feel that you have a useful contribution to add to this special session.
